About Sparta

Modern Sparta is located in the southeastern part of the Peloponnese. To the west of the city, rises Mount Taygetos with its towering peaks and wild beauty, while to the east, is the verdant mountain range of Parnon. Between those mountains flows the mythical river Evrotas and along its west bank extends the city of Sparta.

The two main streets that intersect in the city center are Konstantinos Paleologos Avenue and Lykourgos Avenue. A special place in the social and everyday life of the city, is the large central square with the imposing old town hall, an exceptional neoclassical building of 1909. Opposite to the town hall you can admire the statue of the Spartan warrior, a tribute to the glorious history of the city and two copies of ancient mosaics that are placed in the center. Around the main square there are many cafes, bars and restaurants while under the picturesque arches there are many commercial shops.

What To Do
Archaeological Sites & Monuments

To walk through ancient Sparta is to walk where legends were forged. Unlike the towering marble of Athens, Sparta’s ruins are whispered secrets scattered among silver-green olive groves.

From the imposing Ancient Theatre, which once echoed with the voices of thousands, to the sacred Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia, every stone tells a story of discipline and grit. Just a stone’s throw away lies the Byzantine "Ghost City" of Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage site where frescoed churches and crumbling palaces cling to the hillside, offering a breathtaking bridge between the Classical and Medieval worlds.

Gastronomy

Spartan cuisine is a masterclass in the "power of simple." Rooted in the fertile Lakonian valley, the local flavors are bold, honest, and deeply nourishing.

Here, the extra virgin olive oil is liquid gold, drizzled generously over kayanas (scrambled eggs with fresh tomatoes) and salty sfela cheese. Taste the tradition in every bite of pasto (cured pork) or the hearty bardouniotiko chicken. Whether you’re sipping a robust local wine or snacking on sun-dried figs and honey-drenched paspalas, you’ll find that the Spartan diet remains a true celebration of the earth’s bounty.

Outdoor

For those who hear the call of the wild, the majestic Taygetos Mountains provide the ultimate playground. Known as the "Male Mountain," its jagged peaks and deep gorges offer some of the most rewarding hiking and climbing in Europe.

Wander through pine-scented forests, discover hidden waterfalls, or challenge yourself with a trek to the pyramid-shaped summit of Profitis Ilias. If you prefer a gentler pace, the Eurotas River valley is perfect for cycling and birdwatching. In Sparta, nature isn't just a backdrop; it’s an invitation to test your limits and find your inner peace.

Museums

While the landscape holds the spirit of the city, the museums of Sparta house its soul. The Archaeological Museum of Sparta—the first provincial museum ever built in Greece—displays the iconic bust of the "Leonidas" hoplite and intricate Roman mosaics that defy time.

For a change of pace, the world-class Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil offers a fascinating look at the industry that has defined Mediterranean life for millennia. These spaces don't just display artifacts; they provide the context and color needed to truly understand the Spartan way of life.
